Residential Hybrid Solar System
A hybrid solar system utilises solar power, battery storage and the traditional electricity grid. This system uses solar panels to produce energy during the day, while the batteries store excess energy for use later at night when there is no sunlight and the grid when power needs exceed what is produced and stored in the home. The system has three main components: solar panels, a hybrid inverter, and a battery bank.
Benefits of residential hybrid solar system include:
Maximise solar energy use
- Hybrid solar systems can store unused solar energy during the day for later use. This means you can maximise solar energy use and reduce your reliance on grid power.
Solar savings day and night
- With a residential hybrid solar system, you can use solar energy during peak nighttime power rates. This can help you increase your savings potential, as you don’t have to be home during the day to enjoy the benefits of solar power.
Less expensive than off-grid
- Residential hybrid solar systems are less expensive than off-grid solar systems because they allow you to draw on the grid when needed. You don’t need a backup generator, and your battery bank’s capacity can be downsized. Off-peak electricity from the grid is also cheaper and cleaner than diesel.
Capitalise on time-of-use pricing
- Residential hybrid solar systems can take advantage of the smart network. You can fill the battery when power rates are low and draw on the battery when power rates are high.
Why choose a hybrid system rather than a grid-tied
You can use solar energy day and night with a hybrid solar system. You can also programme your battery to recharge during the cheap off-peak power, which enables you to maximise solar use and energy savings.
How much money can I save with a hybrid system?
That depends on how much electricity your home uses, where you live, your combination of day & nighttime energy use, the rate your electricity company charges – both fixed and variable and several other factors. If you are home during the day, you can expect to reduce your monthly electricity bill by up to 70%.
Will a hybrid system ensure I have power during a black-out?
Yes, you can still run a few critical appliances or devices from the energy stored in your battery. However, as a safety feature, the solar system will not feed additional energy into your home or onto the grid.
Residential grid-tied solar system
A grid-tied solar system is a solar energy system connected to the power grid and doesn’t include a battery. It works by generating electricity from the sun’s energy using solar panels that can be used to power your home during the day. Any electricity generated that isn’t used in the house is fed back into the grid, for which you are paid.
Benefits of a grid-tied Solar System include:
Great for people who use power during the day
- An excellent option for people home during the day or heating a pool or underfloor heating. The solar energy produced during the day is used to power these appliances, reducing your reliance on grid energy.
Can save money on power bills
- The benefits of using solar electricity to meet your daytime energy needs, plus earning money from your excess energy generated, will be visible on your power bill from day one.
Cheapest solar option
- One of the main benefits of a grid-tied solar system is that it’s a cost-effective way to reduce your electricity bills. This system doesn’t need a battery to store excess energy generated during the day.
Earn money from excess energy sent back to the grid.
- Surplus energy is sent to the grid; you earn money for every kW sent, which reduces your bill further.
The national grid acts as a virtual battery, providing additional power when needed.
- Batteries are expensive and have finite capacity. If you already have a grid connection, it makes sense to use it when needed to ensure your have all the power you need when you need it.
How much will I save on my electricity bills?
That depends on how much electricity your home uses, where you live, your daytime energy use, the fixed and variable electricity rates, and several other factors.
If you are home during the day, you can expect to reduce your monthly electricity bill by up to 50%. To find out how much you can save upload your power bill here
Can my solar panels generate power during the night?
Solar panels do not generate electricity at night because there is no sunlight. For nighttime energy, you will draw from the grid.

How will I know if my property is a good candidate for solar panels?
The best place for a solar array will be a north-facing area of your property with minimal obstruction. That means no trees in the way and no shade from chimneys or neighbouring houses to block the sun’s rays.
East and West-facing properties can also gain benefits from switching to solar. Don’t despair if your property doesn’t appear to fit these criteria. Our Solar Engineer will be able to assess your home and let you know for sure.
Does roof orientation matter?
Yes. A system with solar panels facing in a southerly direction will generate far less than one with a northerly aspect. However, east/west installations can be a good option depending on the installation scenario. We can examine your property and provide evidence-backed generation and potential savings figures.
Will my solar panels generate electricity during cloudy, rainy or snowy days?
Your solar panels need direct, unobstructed access to UV rays. This means your solar system will still generate electricity during cloudy, rainy, or snowy days- however, they won’t produce as much energy as they do on clear days.
