RV & Marine Specification Process

When specifying a solar system for camping or marine use there are few basic elements to work through, including:
  • Size of the berth or boat
  • The number of people using the camper/boat at the same time
  • How long  each camping/boating trip is likely to be
  • The distance and frequency of travel
  • Location: freedom camping, holiday park, southland or northland
  • Time of year: summer only, spring through autumn, year-round

Calculating the Electrical Load

The best place to start is to add up all the electrical loads to size the battery bank and solar. This power formula is handy: POWER (WATTS)= VOLTAGE X AMPS By understanding the entire load and the likely usage of each device, you can design a system that will give you the right amount of capacity and power.

Example Calculation

For instance:
  • LED Lights = 20W/12V = 1.6A x 5 hours per night = 8AH Compressor
  • Fridge/Freezer avg = 20W/12V = 1.6A x 12 hrs per night = x 19.2AH
  • TV = 45W/12V = 3.75A x 5 hrs per night = 18.75AH
  • Water pump = 20W/12V = 1.6A x 1hr per day = 1.6AH
Total Amp Hours consumed = 47.55AH or rounded up to 50AH

Simplifying the Product Selection Process

We recommend the following system components, to provide years of hassle free off-grid camping and boating:
  • Solar Panel(s) – To generate DC (Direct Current) electricity from sunlight
  • Solar Controller(s) – to take DC from the panel(s) and charge your battery bank.
  • Battery Bank (1 or more batteries) – stores DC electricity.
  • Battery Monitor – To monitor your battery usage and remaining capacity.
  • Inverter -To convert DC battery power to AC power for small devices and loads.

Can I figure out if I have picked the right parts for the project?

We offer a range of options to support product selection, such as a web chat to talk to one of our Solar Engineers or call us. We can do an in-depth assessment over the phone or put the products in your shopping cart that you believe are right and tick the box to get us to check your order before shipment. We will give you a call and ensure that the selected parts will fit your purpose.

How does shipping and installation work?

We ship within one business day of receipt of order anywhere in NZ. If you would like us to arrange installation, please tick the installation box at check out and we will call you to provide a quote for installation or direct you to a local installer.
